ENGLISH FOR VILLAGE WOMEN

Marina Safronova,

Ulamış, Seferihisar, 16 March – 10 April 2015:

“I am very happy that I was accepted for the project! I was teaching English to the village women from Kadın Evi in Ulamış and it was a great experience of intercultural communication for me.

Since I don’t speak Turkish well and the women had no commands of English at all, it was a bit difficult at the beginning.
We had no printed textbooks, there was no projector in the classroom either. So, there was just a board and a pen at my disposal, and I should confess it was kind of challenging.

However, since the very first lessons we managed to find the ways for the efficient cooperation. The poor equipment made me create new teaching techniques and methods on the spot and naturally it contributed much to my teaching skills. I tried to use as many various video materials as possible to make the things more understandable for my students. We played a lot and focused on communication first of all, so I hope that the whole process of learning was very enjoyable. If I really managed to bring something new and exciting to their life I am very happy!
I have learnt a lot from my girls, too! Being involved into daily interaction with them I discovered and understood many new things about the Turkish culture and mentality. They helped me to improve my Turkish which is very important for me. On the whole, I’m thankful to them for their diligence and commitment they showed in class as well as for warm welcome and moral support they gave me.

I’d like to thank the administration of Kadın Evi too for the great accommodation they provided me with! I had the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful Aegean coast with its lovely green hills every day. Thanks besides to the hotel staff who treated me as a VIP-guest and with whom we became friends. I was giving English lessons to them, too, and it was a real fun!

I have just sweet memories about my time in Ulamış.”
