RAMADAN IN THE TOWN

GEN-14, bu yılın en dikkat çeken kamplarından biriydi. Bu yıl Ramazan’ın Temmuz ayına gelmesi nedeniyle sene başında kamp yeri bulmakta zorlanacağımızı düşünürken Balıkesir’in Dursunbey Kaymakamı “Kampı Ramazan’da yapalım, yemek sorununu da iftar çadırlarında çözeriz” deyince kafamda “Ramazan Kampı” düşüncesi oluştu. Kampın adını da “Ramadan in the town” koyarak duyurduk. Gerçekten de ilgi çekti. Başvuranlar arasında Avrupa’da yaşayıp Müslüman olan 2 gönüllü vardı. Yeni seçilen belediye başkanının da projeye destek olmasıyla (ve İngilizce bilen kızını da kampçılara destek olmak üzere görevlendirmesiyle) kamp oldukça güzel geçti. Gönüllüler akşam yemeklerini iftar çadırlarında ve ailelerde yediler. Kültürel değişim anlamında güzel paylaşımlar oldu. Bu kampta lider Mazlum Doğan Gündüz idi ve toplam 14 gönüllümüz vardı. Seneye burada bir kamp daha yapabileceğimizi umuyorum
KAMP TANIMI :
GEN-14 RAMADAN IN THE TOWN DURSUNBEY 04.07 – 20.07 RENO 20 VOLS
This camp is a unique opportunity to get to know the traditional way of life of Turkish people in the rural areas. The camp will take place in traditional Dursunbey town with 17.000 inhabitants. As this camp will take place during the sacred Ramadan month of Arabic calendar, the volunteers will have a chance to observe how local people live in Ramadan. The volunteers will have the change to have dinners with local families who are keeping fasts during the Ramadan or join in public dinners called “iftar” which means end of daily fasting.
W: Reorganizing the public picnic area of the town. Leveling the ground, paving stones on the roads, creating green areas, setting up tables and sitting groups, etc.
A: In a guest house, sleeping bag and mat are not necessary.
F: Volunteers will prepare the breakfast by themselves with the given food. Lunch will be served as packs at the working area. Dinners will be offered either by families or eaten with crowds.

LO: Dursunbey is a medium size town in the west of Turkey. The nearest city is Balıkesir.
R: Volunteers should be aware that thay will be in an religious environment thus must respect the rules of Ramadan like not eating, drinking or smoking in public during the day. Clothing is also a serious issue, no short trousers, mini skirts, will be allowed. This is really a nice project for the people who likes to learn about other cultures.
T: Istanbul. The project will start in Istanbul with a compulsory orientation meeting, that all volunteers should attend on the first day of the camp at GENCTUR Office. The group will travel together to the camp site by an overnight coach on the same evening.
